powell, OHA Brief History of Powell, OH

The land where present-day Powell now sits used to be part of a vast wilderness sparsely populated by a number of different Native American peoples. French Canadian and European explorers surveyed it in the 1600s, before Great Britain, France, and the Iroquois League claimed ownership. By the 1700s, it had become part of Ohio County. Four different states claimed portions of it during the Revolutionary War.

In the early years after the war, as the area was increasingly settled by beneficiaries of the Land Ordinance of 1785, Powell was called Middlebury, and you can still see those roots in the names of multiple streets and housing developments. Middlebury’s population was small, mostly consisting of farmers, milliners, buggy makers, and blacksmiths. The town was renamed Hall’s Corner after the deed owner Thomas R. Hall in 1850, and it was finally renamed Powell in honor of the judge who approved the request for a local post office.

It took a long time for Powell to grow. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1947 and was known as the Village of Powell, but it didn’t officially become a city until 2000. Since then, the population has nearly doubled again to around 11,500 residents.
